Hello my sweet and fabulous creatures! I am showing how to make these super cute gelatin balloons, which I used on the Museum of Ice Cream Sprinkle Pool Cake to look like life size balloons. This is an easy to moderate technique.
To make the balloons you will need:
- 7-8 Mini balloons in any color – 5” or smaller (use the ones with the round tip if possible)
- 1 box of unflavored gelatin (Knox brand 1 oz.)
- Pink food coloring (or the color of your choice)
- A Styrofoam block or big ball
Fill up the balloons to about 2 inches or the desired size for your cake. Tie them once. Before tying them a second time, insert a toothpick horizontally inside the second loop. It’s important that the toothpick doesn’t touch the balloon. In a wide mug, mix 4 tbsp. of gelatin with 8 tbsp. of water. The 1oz. box has 4 envelopes measuring 1 tbsp. each. You may use all of them.
Add food coloring and mix well. Microwave for 10-20 seconds. Remove top layer of foam with a spoon. Dip each balloon and let the excess gelatin drip off. Insert pick on foam to dry.
Let dry for 5-10 minutes and repeat about 2 or 3 more times. Let them dry for 12-24 hours. Once dry, cut off the knot and gently pull out the balloon from the inside of the gelatin bubble. Place them on the sprinkle pool cake or apply directly on the cake as a garland of bubbles. They will look stunning!
